Rock On: The Second Life

My earlier post about the Monday mornings is to do with ambitions and dreams that keep us on the go through the dreary monday mornings and more. And yet many days driving from my way to work i ask myself, is this what i wanted to do all along? Is this what is to me and defines me as an individual. Or is there something else to me that perhaps was more fulfilling to my being. Something that i left behind in one of the crossroads where i made my choices in life.

A movie that recently caught my imagination (and people are raving about) also deals with ambitions and second lifes is Rock On. In the office going crowds that i know off, this movie is taking cult proportions. I do not recollect a movie with such refinement, maturity, class and story apart from Dil Chahta Hai in 2001. Strangely, both movies have Farhan Akhtar, who, i personally hold in very high esteem for being a man of many distinguished talents.

Second life: Something to do with fulfilling the purpose of the soul. It is beyond the normal work, compensation, office, home routine. In some terms it is the actualization of self. It is following where your heart leads and doing what you think is best for you not what the world thinks is best for you. In the case of Rock On, the movie, it is the Magik they create playing music together. Without Magik, they seem to be floating all over-some successful, some not so... It is the contribution to music that completes each of the protagonist's self portrayal and how they come together 10 years after their first attempt at stardom to fulfill their dreams for themselves. Interestingly, it is clearly shown in the movie that the second innings was beyond "stardom status", it was a means to fulfill their personalities. Farhan and Arjun deserve two thumbs up for the sensitive portrayals they bring thru on the screen. The Music grows on you with time and you begin liking it every time you hear it a bit more. Abhishek Kapoor, the diro of the movie deserves kudos for taking a clean simple story and adding so much in terms of performances and emotions...

Probably what has helped this movie is that devoid of a star cast, there are no expectations which one takes to the theatre. The movie is brilliant and touches your heart, giving you those rare cinematic experiences where you feel as if you have lived your life in the story and the characters. That is where the movie blows its audiences out completely. Farhan in only 4 movies that he is been in has made such a terrific statement of his talents. His skills at singing, script, editing, acting and directing make him a show man of sorts...

One does take a lesson from this movie. For me, it was when i identified my second life and accepted it and promised myself that i would do something about it rather than just ignoring it. Rarely does a movie have such an out lasting effect and i hope i will be able to take this second life to a meaningful vista in my life... Rock On!
